Wow. It’s been quite a looooong time
since a boxing match has been this big. And frankly, I’ve missed it. I miss
going over a bud’s house
with the guys and watching a great Friday night 12 rounder. Gone are the
days when boxing gripped America as football and basketball now do. But the
promotion for the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight seems to have reawakened
America’s passion for boxing. Hopefully, it will be a classic like the old
Ali-Frazier duels. There is no shortage of storylines, with Mayweather
recently reuniting with his father, De La Hoya’s former trainer. Mayweather
reconciled with his father after a long dispute which involved, among other
things, his father in jail for drug charges in 1996 when Floyd Jr. won his
Olympic medal. Mayweather will be looking for his 5th title in
his 5th different weight class, while also looking to maintain
his undefeated professional record. Mayweather has sated that this will be
his last fight. De La Hoya is also looking for a swan song end to his
career, as he hopes to go into boxing promotion. But he first will have to
knock off Mayweather.
PICK: Mayweather bloodies De La Hoya in a rout, but can’t get the KO.
