Young Star Nugent Joins Portsmouth

David Nugent, the 23 year old English international striker, has joined Portsmouth from Preston North End for a transfer fee of 6,000,000 pounds. He has scored 33 goals in 94 appearances for Preston, whom he joined on a 100,00 pound transfer from Bury in 2005. For the England U21 team he scored 4 goals in 14 appearances, and for the senior team he has scored 1 goal in his lone appearance, when he became the first Football League player (GKs not included) to take the field for England since 1999. The bidding war for Nugent was between Sunderland and Portsmouth, before Sunderland withdrew their bid. Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp had this to say: "I think he's got what it takes to become a top, top player and a top striker. I'm delighted to have him here."
