Who
is the Starter in Tampa?
By John Janovsky, TheSportsStand.com (7/6/07)
With the start of a new season about
to dawn, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping they have hit the jackpot with
Jeff Garcia, who they expect to lead them to the playoffs. So now with three
potential starting quarterbacks, will Garcia emerge from all the rest and
become Tampa’s starter? Or will he sit and rot on the bench for an entire
season? With Chris Simms and Jake Plummer both hoping to become the
Buccaneers starting quarte
rback,
which one will emerge and become their starting quarterback. With training
camp not yet even begun, Garcia is the early favorite to be the starter but
never count on that. With the way the NFL works you shouldn’t count out
Bruce Gradkowski in this race. Garcia threw for 1309 yard had 10 touchdown
and 2 interceptions and his completion percentage was 61.7 with the Eagles
last year in just 8 games. In those 8 games he led his team to a Wild Card
berth, and a victory over the Giants. Another direction they could go in is
former Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer who was benched about a little more
then midway trough the season by rookie Jay Cutler. But Plummer has made it
painfully obvious he did not want to be a back up but I think he has went to
the wrong team because there is going to be a major battle for a spot here
and there is a good chance he will be a clipboard holder. But Plummer has
said he is retired and the Bucs, though they hold his rights, will probably
not see him at camp. Also in the running would be Chris Simms, who was
replaced last year after only three games after being placed on injured
reserve with a ruptured spleen. In very limited action last year, Simms
threw for 585 yard had one touchdown and had seven interceptions. So what
will the Buccaneers do: will they go with youth in Simms or Gradkowski, or
for veteran leadership ni Garcia or Plummer. So sit back and enjoy, this
will be an interesting topic when the Buccaneers open training camp near the
end of the month.
