Pacman:
Game Over (For Now)
By Andrew McCarten, TheSportsStand.com (4/20/07)
After meeting with new NFL commish Roger Goodell
on April 3rd, Pa
cman
Jones was suspended for the entire season, unpaid, and his suspension is
subject to review after ten games. A fellow West Virginia alumnus Chris
Henry, the WR for the much maligned Bengals, was suspended eight games.
Chris Henry has, within the last two years has:
been found to have marijuana in his shoes after a routine speeding stop
been arrested for gun concealment and aggravated assault charges
been investigated in a sex assault case
been stopped and tested with a breathalyzer, which registered 0.92, .12 points over the limit
been suspended two games last season for violating the personal conduct and substance abuse policy
been convicted of providing alcohol to minors
I admire Goodell f
or
his approach on the new conduct rule: the integrity of the game is upheld by
the players, on and off the field. But when Henry has a rap sheet like that,
and Jones is yet to get convicted of anything, is it really fair. In
America, our legal system operates by the “innocent until proven guilty”
rule. Henry has been proven guilty many times: Jones hasn’t. So why is Jones
serving a harsher suspension. Goodell clearly wanted to make an example for
the players, but I think he chose the wrong person.
